Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will dynamically adjust its resolution output on PS4 Pro to maintain a constant framerate.

Sony announced this earlier today via a new blog post. As covered earlier, we already knew that Hellblade would run at a higher resolution on Sony’s enhanced PS4 console, but the developer has now confirmed that it favors performance over resolution.

To ensure that Senua’s movement and combat aren’t interrupted, the game dynamically adjusts its resolution “on the fly” between 1440p (2560x1440) and 1080p (1920x1080) to uphold a stable framerate.

Of course, the above applies to those playing on a 4K capable screen, but players using a standard HD screen will also benefit from the additional horsepower inside the PS4 Pro through increased image-quality by down-sampling from higher resolution assets.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will release tomorrow for both PC and PlayStation 4. The game explores the story of Senua, a Celtic warrior who is left traumatized by a Viking invasion. To ensure a sensitive and accurate portrayal of Senua's psychosis, Ninja Theory has been working closely with Psychiatrist and Professor of Health and Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, Paul Fletcher.

“True understanding of mental health is not simply about books, lectures or verbal descriptions but from deeper engagement on all levels", Fletcher said back in 2015. "Working with Ninja Theory has shown me the potential that gaming has for sharing in a character's experiences and engendering empathy in ways that go well beyond those offered by simple academic descriptions. Maybe this approach will contribute powerful new ways of challenging stigma.”
