In the midst of rumors that Apple might be launching a new Apple TV with 4K capabilities, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has gathered evidence that the said notion might be true. He collected screenshots of the tvOS simulator which suggests that the set top box with 4K support might be on its way. At this point in time, the tvOS runs media content in Full HD or 1920 x 1080 by default. However, the leaked screenshots from the developer suggest an up scale in the resolution of the highly anticipated upgrade for the Apple TV. tvOS Simulator Reveals 4K Support For Apple TV
As can be seen in the screenshots provided, the picture is being scaled by 2X to 3840 x 2160, which is 4K resolution. In the screenshots shared by Steve Troughton-Smith, it can be seen how well the upgraded resolution is aligned with the edges, which is one of the reasons it can be regarded as the real deal.
On a side note, Apple too started listing iTunes titles with HDR and 4K badges. It could possibly be true that a future Apple TV upgrade is on its way. At this point in time, you can watch movies and TV shows in full HD and not above it. This would be a major upgrade for the Apple TV as it would make the set top box stand out from the crowd in the highly competitive market.
