I think it's been some time since we covered some decent benchmarks of Intel's Coffee Lake CPUs, especially the flagship Core i7-8700K. Well, the wait is over and we have a fresh set of benchmarks straight from Chinese sources. The latest benchmarks show Intel's 6 core chip blazing past AMD's eight core and even Intel's 6 core HEDT processors.

Intel Core i7-8700K Leaked Benchmarks Show Faster Than AMD's 8 Core and Intel HEDT 6 Core CPUs

The Intel Core i7-8700K will be an interesting processor for consumers as it is the first mainstream chip from the blue giant to feature 6 cores. The new chips will be marketed under the Intel 8th gen branding and will be featured on a new platform known as the 300-series. The 300-series platform will mean that the chips will not be compatible with older 200-series platforms although the 300-series is known to feature the same socket aka LGA 1151 (v2). While we have seen some benchmarks for the flagship chip, nothing has been conclusive or worthy to be compared to other processors. This leak however is different as it compares the new Intel chip to it's 7th generation predecessors and also AMD's 8 core Ryzen processor.

Intel Core i7-8700K – The Coffee Lake Flagship With 6 Cores and 4.3 GHz Boost Across All Cores

The Intel Core i7-8700K will be the flagship processor of the lineup. It will feature 6 cores and 12 threads. The chip will be compatible with the LGA 1151 socket and rumors are that board makers will extend support of Coffee Lake onto 200-series and even 100-series platforms. The chip will be Intel’s first hexa core product and will be based on the 14nm process node.

In terms of clock speeds, we are looking at a 3.7 GHz base frequency which boosts up to 4.3 GHz (6 core), 4.4 GHz (4 core), 4.5 GHz (2 core) and 4.7 GHz (1 core). These clocks are really impressive so we can expect much faster gaming performance on Coffee Lake parts than the current generation of CPUs. The chip is fully unlocked allowing for overclocking and comes with a TDP of 95W. There’s 12 MB of L3 cache on board along with a GT2 tier iGPU. The chip supports DDR4-2666 MHz clocked memory (native) and up to 4400 MHz+ (OC). We can expect the Core i7-8700K to cost around $349 US when it launches in Q3 2017.

Intel Core i7-8700K vs Intel Core i7-7700K, Intel Core i7-7800X and AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Benchmarks

So the benchmarks compare the Intel Core i7-8700K to the Intel Core i7-7700K, Intel Core i7-7800X and the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 CPU. All CPUs were clocked at their stock frequencies and the results in the benchmarks are very interesting. In wPrime, the Intel Core i7-8700K managed to beat every CPU in single thread and even multi-thread performance.

intel-core-i7-8700k_fritz-chess
intel-core-i7-8700k_cinebench-r11-5

Same was seen in Fritz Chess benchmark, the Core i7-8700K had the best multi-threading score while the Core i7-8700K and Core i7-7700K were close to one another in single threaded tests. Moving to Cinebench R15, the Core i7-8700K with it's 6 cores was 10 points lower than the 8 core Ryzen 7 1700 in multi-threaded test but was way faster in the single-threaded test. In the older Cinebench R11.5 benchmark, the Core i7-8700K was faster than AMD's 8 core chip in both single and multi-threading tests. You can see a run down of these benchmarks below:

Intel Core i7-8700K CPU-z Performance:

Intel Core i7-6700K21449124
Intel Core i7-6850K194011170
Intel Core i7-5930K184110676

These are really impressive numbers from a 6 core mainstream chip by Intel, but what would really determine its success would be the pricing. We hope that we see this chip around $300 US which will make it a good deal for most mainstream builders out there. The Intel Core i3-8350K also has very good performance that is on par with the Core i7-7700K and should sell under $200 US which would be a killer deal for budget builders, benchmarks on that here.
