The President of the Pokémon Company, Tsunekazu Ishihara, warns that people shouldn’t overestimate the potential of the Nintendo Switch.

While Nintendo’s new hybrid platform has been a great success since its launch back in March of this year, it still needs to attract a wider audience, according to Ishihara. That’s what the CEO of the Pokémon Company said during a recent interview with Bloomberg. On the other hand, admits that he has been wrong about the initial success of the platform, and that he sees potential in the Switch.

I told Nintendo that Switch wouldn’t be a success before it went on sale, because I thought that in the age of the smartphone, no one would carry out a game console. It’s obvious I was wrong. I came to realize the key to a successful game is quite simple: software with absolute quality leads sales of hardware. Playing style can be flexible if the software is attractive enough. Currently, it’s popular among the early adopters, but there needs to be one more step to attract a wider audience. I see more potential in Switch, but one shouldn’t overestimate its potential.

The Switch has been selling amazingly well, and according to Nintendo, the platform has been setting sales records day. “Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO said back in April of this year. “With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone.”

In its first 4 months on sale, the Nintendo Switch managed to sell 4.7 million units.
