Battle Royale is the new major trend in gaming, it's clear by now. After the success of games like H1Z1: King of the Kill and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, GTA Online recently received a new mode inspired by the Battle Royale concept called Motor Wars.

Yesterday, Epic Games announced that a Battle Royale mode is coming to Fortnite on September 26th, though it can already be tested. Here's what Donald Mustard, Worldwide Creative Director at Epic Games, had to say:

We love Battle Royale games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and thought Fortnite would make a great foundation for our own version. A few months ago, Epic’s Unreal Tournament team began experimenting with the mode while the original Fortnite team kept updating the core game. To maintain balance, we kept the PvP mode separate from the PvE mode and the new Battle Royale mode turned out to be so much fun we decided to share it with everyone to gather feedback.

The big additions brought by Fortnite are the ability to build, lay down traps and use the destructibility. Epic also shared a FAQ on Reddit where it assured PvE fans that the modes will be kept separate; you can find it below.

As a reminder, Fortnite recently launched in Early Access mode on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While the game will be free in 2018 upon its full release, you have to buy a Founder's Pack to get in right now, though there's a 25% discount this week off the Standard and Deluxe packs in case you're interested.

Will my progress in Fortnite PvE campaign transfer over into Battle Royale?
We don’t know if Battle Royale will connect to the Fortnite Campaign. We are considering cosmetic connections between PvE and PvP and compendium-like content, but nothing is set in stone. Let us know what you think would be cool.

Does Battle Royale’s release mean you’ll delay Fortnite’s 2018 “free to play” release?
No. We are committed to make sure we release Fortnite in 2018 as a free to play game.

Will I ever be able to buy power for an advantage in Fortnite Battle Royale? What are items/content are you selling?
No. In Fortnite Battle Royale we will not sell gameplay-affecting items. We are considering offering cosmetic or compendium-like items. We're building Battle Royale as a competitive game mode.

Where are the vehicles?
Right now we’re hammering through a bunch of hot items. Squads are our number one priority, but we are also working on combat and general gameplay feel, console controls, and inventory management.

Teams. Where are the teams?
We know. We know. We’re working around the clock to deliver squad play ASAP. As a matter of fact we’re already testing it internally. We’ll update on progress regularly. We had a lot of fun here with Battle Royale and wanted to get it to you all so we could start looking to you to help us improve it right away.

Will you add more maps?
First we have to see how our current map holds up. We’ve only been able to test internally, so we’ll have a lot to change once we start getting in data and gameplay feedback.

Fortnite has a lot of weapons. Are all of them coming over to the Battle Royale mode?
No. We feel like there’s a lot of room to regularly pluck from the large arsenal of weapons available in the Fortnite. We launched the mode with a standard set of weapons and we'll see where it goes from here.

What are you working to immediately improve or add?
Squads is a very, very high priority. We’re also looking to make the feel of combat better by focusing on controls, weapons and movement. We're also working on the inventory management. The Public Test is going to allow us to see how our matchmaking system works with a lot of people and what performance issues we’ll need to fix as well.
