In June 2017, Project Fi took to Twitter to announce a new mid-range device with incoming support for Google’s MVNO service. Many rumors predicted the device to be the Moto X geared with Android One support.
Today, Google confirmed that the device is none other than the Moto X4, which was unveiled at the IFA 2017. It is the first device non-Pixel or Nexus phone to debut on Project Fi officially.
The Moto X4 runs Android One, and there is also Android One logo on the rear panel to highlight it. The 4th generation Moto X device features a 5.2-inch 1080p display with curves on the front and back sides. It comes powered by a Snapdragon 630 processor clubbed with
3GB of RAM and 32GB expandable internal storage. There is dual-camera setup on the rear with 12MP and 8MP sensors for offering a wide range of effects such as background blur. On the front, there is a 16MP camera with “adaptive low-light mode” and “panoramic selfies.”
Running Android One as the OS, it is touted to offer “pure Android experience” focused on providing timely updates. Google promises to deliver Android Oreo on the Moto X4, before the end of this year. It also promises to update the device to the following version after Android Oreo, i.e., Android P.
The Moto X4 with Android One is priced at $399. It is available in Super Black and Sterling Blue color options. Pre-ordering for the device begin today on Project Fi website. Google has also set up a trade-in program for older Nexus devices, up tp $165.
Besides, users will also receive an additional $50 credit if they get into the trade-in program before October 5. Project Fi also has a referral program that offers $20 credit to both referrer and sign-ups. There is also a promotional offer that awards winners with prizes or trip to the Googleplex in Mountain View.
With the Nexus 5X beginning to show its age, customers looking to get on the Project Fi bandwagon were left without a decent mid-range offering. Google wanted to change that with the introduction of the Moto X4 and the Android One initiative in the U.S. The Moto X4 gets clean software experience with Android One, putting it in line with Nexus and Pixel.
