Razer’s acquisition of smartphone company Nextbit has resulted in some well-deserved fruit because according to the peripheral manufacturer’s CEO, a mobile device is expected to be unveiled very soon.
Razer CEO Does Not Specify the Mobile Device as a Smartphone but Does Talk About the Mobile Market in General
Interviewing Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan, CNBC is told that the manufacturer is working on a mobile device, but the actual term is somewhat ambiguous because a mobile device can also mean a handheld gaming computer.
“One of the most hotly rumored things about Razer is that we're coming up with a mobile device. And I can say that we are coming up with a mobile device specifically geared toward gamers and entertainment. We're hoping to have it come ... by the end of the year, so that's something we're working on.”
However, our concerns are slightly nullified when the executive starts talking about the mobile market when he says the following:
“The mobile market is one of those that we've taken a long-term view to look at ... We realized that a lot of our gamers are also passionate about the mobile gaming market, so we've done a couple of moves.”
Aside from the term ‘mobile device’ there is little to no information as to what Razer is planning in the future. If it is going to be a smartphone, then it will most likely be relying on Google’s Android platform and using ‘off the shelf’ hardware components from Qualcomm.
Nextbit was known for releasing the Robin, a phone that had an interesting business model of allowing users to store their data in the cloud. Unfortunately, it had terrible build quality as there was no metal chassis part found on the device. This decreases production costs by an astronomical margin, but let us hope that the company rolls out a premium-made mobile device for us in the future.
