Apple officially announced the iPhone X last month and while the device is yet to hit the shelves, the rumor mill is gathering some heat. It is predicted that the 2018 iPad Pro models will inherit the iPhone X's shiny new feature that allowed it to unlock the device. Yes, that's right, according to a new prediction from the reliable supply chain analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, Apple is expected to add the TrueDepth Camera technology which enables Face ID facial recognition in the next iPad Pro upgrade. Apple To Implement TrueDepth Camera Technology In 2018 iPad Pro Models
At this point in time, KGI expects that the TrueDepth Camera technology and Face ID will only be incorporated into the iPad Pro models. This means that only the 10.5-inch iPad pro and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro would receive the upgrade. What this means is that the smaller or cheaper variants of the iPad would remain as they are or would receive upgrades as per usual. However, since the iPad Pro lineup is the flagship amongst the category, it makes perfect sense for Apple to make the upgrades exclusive to the bigger ones.
In addition to this, the TrueDepth Camera technology or Face ID would mark as a differential feature in the iPad models, making them stand out from the rest of the crowd. This would act as an extension to the same approach of Apple in which the company has added support for Apple Pencil and Smart Connectors to the flagship variants of the iPad.
We predict iOS devices to be equipped with TrueDepth Camera in fiscal year 2018 will include iPhone X and new 2018 iPhone and iPad models. Because of this, we believe more developers will pay attention to the TrueDepth camera and facial recognition-related applications.
On the other side of things, the report fails to mention what will happen to the Touch ID or Home button of the iPad. Would it be removed or would there be a separate functionality added?
