It's a tough job being a flagship smartphone manufacturer. You've got to consistently come up with new features and upgrades. These are to justify price tags in excess of $800. After all, not a lot of folks will spend that kind of money unless they're convinced about uniqueness. Just take a look at Apple and the iPhone X. Samsung Shrinks Current Environmental Sensors To Fit Them Inside A Smartphone Display; Will Galaxy S9 Come With The Feature?
The rumor mill's a great blessing. It only takes one device's 'cycle' of leaks to end and we get on with the next. It's a trend that's been consistent for a couple of years, especially the 2016-2017 flagship smartphone cycle. News and leaks related to the iPhone 8/X started to surface since November last year. The Galaxy S8/S8+ came even earlier, as Samsung launches its flagship smartphones in Q1 of each year.
Now, we might be looking at one of the upcoming Galaxy S9's first concrete rumor. This isn't the first leak/ rumor for the smartphone. In fact, the principle mentioned above is in effect for the smartphone since April. But impending smartphone launches including Google's Pixel, LG's V30 and Apple's iPhone didn't give much airtime to rumors for Samsung's 2018 flagship. Now that we're done with all of this year's launches, it's time to start taking a serious look at what to expect next year.
When it comes to air quality sensors, it's a trade-off between size and quality of output. For high quality ones, the size isn't feasible for smartphone placement. And the small ones aren't very efficient. Samsung's patented a sensor that's got high material density but a size small enough to embed it in a smartphone display. Samsung's also launched UV sensors in its Galaxy lineup, so the Korean tech giant does love the environment (pun definitely intended).
Whether the S9 features this sensor is still up for speculation. It'll be a big help to Asian users, especially those living in Beijing. Other rumors for the Galaxy S9 point towards an incremental upgrade over the Galaxy S8. It won't get a virtual fingerprint reader, according to the latest.
