Google Dismisses ‘Blue Shift’ As An Issue on Pixel 2 XL, Calls It ‘Inherent In The Display Hardware’

After receiving substantial backlash for the blue shift issue on the Pixel 2 XL smartphones, Google has finally come out with a statement. The Pixel 2 XL features the LG-made P-OLED display which seems to be plagued with several issues, right from poor viewing angles to shift in colour - from tint to blue - when you tilt the phone to the left or right. The change is pretty noticeable and annoying for the users.

However, for Google, it does not seem like an issue. The company recently revealed that it will be bringing some changes to the Pixel 2 XL to fix screen burn-in and help with colours. Apparently, the company did not say much about the blue shift. In its latest statement, Google states that the blue shift is not an issue at all, in fact, it is inherent in the display hardware.

Seang Chau, VP, Engineering, Google writes:

We want to add some info regarding the blue tint that some of you have been asking about. The slight blue tint is inherent in the display hardware and only visible when you hold the screen at a sharp angle. All displays are susceptible to some level of color shift (e.g. red, yellow, blue) when viewing from off angles due to the pixel cavity design. Similar to our choice with a cooler white point, we went with what users tend to prefer and chose a design that shifts blue.

Well, what Google wants you to know is that this “blue shift” is not an issue, it is an intrinsic part of the display hardware. Users have to treat it as a part of the device and not get annoyed whenever it shows up. The company does clarify that the blue shift appears at “sharp angles,” but several reviewers claim that it happens even at "dull angles."

Of course, the blue shift is something that users may slowly get used to. But for a flagship product with hefty price tag, users don't want to come across such issues.
