While the majority of flagship smartphones perform well in standard conditions, for long distance photography, they are physically limited. After all, manufacturers tend to be very picky with the components introduced in smartphones, due to the obvious constraints. That being said, we've got an interesting camera sample which allegedly belongs to the Samsung Galaxy S9 today.
The main focus for this image is the dynamic range. You can see how well the purported Galaxy S9 camera samples captures details at long distance. In comparison, the S8's result looks to have HDR turned off. If you take a close look at the windows, you'll see just how much the Galaxy S9 will improve things this year.
Of course, looking at the conditions in which these images were taken, it's far-fetched to form any concrete conclusions based only on these results. Earlier leaks suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S9 will feature a variable aperture, single lens rear camera setup. This will propel it far ahead of its predecessors. The smartphone is also rumored with f/1.5 aperture, allowing it to capture 50% more light than today's flagships.
Right now, while you should expect improvements with the Galaxy S9's rear camera, don't expect the difference as stark as exhibited today. It's unlikely that settings for the S8 and S9 are similar; the Galaxy S8 has the capabilities to perform much better than exhibited today.
