Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. A committed technology leader today, has announced its new MQ04 series 2TB HDD model MQ04ABD200 designed specifically for notebook PCs, 2 and 1 convertibles, all in ones and slimline desktops as well as other applications requiring a high amount of storage and 2.5 inch form factors.

Competition (Finally) at 2.5 inches

While others have had 2TB drives for many years including Samsung's Spinpoint drives Toshiba finally catches up with the competition releasing a dual disk HDD (others have been triple or more) hopefully driving prices down for consumers. No matter how you split it this is good for everyone.  While competition has driven the cost of 3.5 inch Hard Drives down and allowed capacities to go up, the 2.5 inch form factor has remained the same for quite a while.

The MQ04ABD200 delivers 2 TB of storage capacity in a compact 2.5-inch, 9.5 mm height form factor perfect for the aformentioned small form factor PCs, Notebooks and all in ones. The drives has the standard 6 Gbit/s SATA interface and 5,400 rpm performance, combined with a large 128 MB buffer, result in a 34 percent increase in maximum transfer rates and a 50 percent improvement in power efficiency compared to Toshiba's previous 1 TB mobile-class model generation, MQ01ABD100.

"Achieving 2 TB capacity in the industry-standard 2.5-inch form-factor is a big advance in both value and performance," said Scott Wright, Director of HDD Marketing for Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. "With a field-proven two disk 9.5 mm design heritage, the new MQ04 2 TB model offers excellent value and capacity in a space-efficient design."

General availability of the Mq04ABD200 2tb model will start shipping today. Pricing is not avaiable but current pricing suggests that it should be around $100 to compete with other drives within the same price range. Be sure to check WCCFTech for more info and any updates in the coming weeks.
