The Galaxy S8 Oreo saga finally comes to an end (about time). After a delayed (and bumpy) Android Oreo rollout, users of carrier-unlocked Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8 will finally begin to receive a taste of Oreo. While it isn't unusual for carrier-unlocked devices to receive major updates after their carrier-locked counterparts, the delay has been far too long. Samsung has the following to say for the delay, according to their post in their official forum.

We understand that many of you have Unlocked Galaxy S8/+ and Note 8 devices and may be wondering why those with Carrier models are seeing the updates first. The reason for this is that Unlocked devices must go through more rigorous testing than Carrier-specific devices because we need to make sure there is proper network functionality across ALL supported networks. (Ex. Carrier-specific devices are made to handle that one network. Unlocked devices need to be able to handle ANY / ALL compatible networks. Thus, they require some more preparation.)

However, Samsung's international unlocked phones got the update much before their US counterparts, which makes you wonder what's going on at Samsung's US wing. There are no exact dates mentioned, just that the update will be rolled out in 2-3 weeks.

Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe Android Oreo Update Now Rolling Out

Credit where it's due; Back in August 2017 Asus did promise to release an Oreo update for all the Zenfone 4 and Zenfone 3 series of devices, although they didn't specify any timelines. Over the past few weeks, we've seen a couple of devices get Oreo, so it was only a matter before the Zenfone 3 Delux got it. The update brings the firmware version to V80.20.96.89 and includes all the usual Android Oreo features. That includes picture-in-picture mode, Notification Dots, Autofill password manager, support for adaptive icons, Instant Apps, and more. Along with Oreo, the new update also reduces power consumption, adds a Long Screenshot feature, and adds a few improvements here and there. Here's a complete changelog, according to the Asus' Zentalk forum:

• Upgrade to Android O.
• Removed third-party App: TripAdvisor, Puffin Browser and Kindle.
• Removed Do It Later, Mini Movie, Quick Memo, PhotoCollage.
• Moved FM Radio function to quick setting.
• After OS upgrade, to enter “All Apps” menu, use “swiping up” gesture to do so. Original “All Apps Icon” can be moved or changed.

It's good to see that Asus is still supporting a two-year-old flagship with regular updates, although it is unlikely that the Zenfone 3 Delux will get any more updates. It is good news for prospective Zenfone 5 buyers, who can be assured of at least two major software updates. It might take a few days for the update to hit your device, so keep an eye out for it.
