State of Decay 2 Trailer Showcases Crafting, Base Management, and Lots of Zombie Killing

Microsoft-exclusive survival game State of Decay 2 launches next month, and we have a new trailer out of PAX East to whet your appetite for undead destruction. The trailer is brief, but it provides a nice overview of State of Decay 2, including a peek at parts of the game we haven’t seen much of yet, including homestead building, crafting, and team management. Of course, we also get plenty of zombie-slaying action, which actually looks surprisingly fluid and fun for a survival game. Check out the carnage, below.

Looking pretty solid! If I had a criticism of the footage, it’s that the zombie hordes don’t seem to be particularly large or threatening – we never see more than about a dozen of the rotters on screen at once. State of Decay 2’s wide-open spaces almost look kind of…relaxing? Hey, relaxing can be a good thing, but it’s not a word you usually associate with survival games.

Not sure if State of Decay 2 is for you? Well, the barrier to entry isn’t too high – Microsoft recently revealed the game will only cost $30 and won’t contain any microtransactions. Here’s the game’s official description:

State of Decay 2 is a community-centered survival-fantasy game, set in a zombie apocalypse. You control a unique group of survivors, deciding on the best strategies to keep these characters alive while improving their skills and gathering the resources they need. You choose where to make your stand, designing and fortifying your home base just the way you want it. You choose when to make contact with new survivors, and which of these strangers you’ll rescue and recruit to your community.

Every player’s experience is unique. As you play, the open, sandbox world responds to your decisions, developing in real time and dynamically offering new opportunities for you to demonstrate your own personal survival priorities. These decisions also result in real, lasting consequences for your community. State of Decay 2 also offers a co-op multiplayer option, allowing you to invite up to three players to visit your community and help you complete your goals. Or you can jump into a friend’s game to see how their story has developed differently from yours.

State of Decay 2 shambles onto PC and Xbox One on May 22.
