Samsung Explains How It Managed to Achieve the Exquisite Balance of Design & Stellar Audio on the Galaxy S9

Technology-wise, Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ haven’t brought extraordinarily new to the table. There are only some minor improvements to enhance the overall experience. What Samsung did focus on, were the little things and imperfections present in the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to further improve the upcoming series. The most notable additions to the Galaxy S9 lineup are its stereo speakers and for smartphones that are rocking a near bezel-less display, that is pretty difficult to pull off.

Galaxy S9 Is 1.4 Times Louder Than Its Predecessor but Also Presents a Decent Level of Audio Clarity

Samsung wanted to install what it is calling ‘multiple dynamic speakers’ on its latest flagships for an engaging audio experience. That entailed sound coming out from different areas of the smartphone and not just from the bottom as was the case with previous Galaxy phones. Samsung placed a speaker on the top of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ too for a stereo-level experience. The edge-to-edge display and thin bezels made this something of a challenge and the company had to move around internal components on the phone to fit in the additional speaker.

Engineers from different teams worked together to rearrange the components, but it still wasn’t enough as the two speakers differed in size. This issue was tackled by fine-tuning the speakers so that the output levels would be balanced. The size of the existing speakers was also increased by a factor of 1.5 and the magnetic interference from other components was reduced.

All of these efforts paid off, with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ becoming 1.4 times louder than its predecessors. Apart from all this in-house work, Samsung teamed up with Dolby Atmos to add a virtual surround sound effect which makes you feel like the sound is coming from different directions. Samsung also sought the services AKG to fine tune the speakers which expanded their bass range and prevented distortions.

So you see, a lot of effort took place inside the flagships, thus maintaining the same design as its predecessors, unfortunately.
