Apple is reportedly going to launch three new iPhones this fall, two of which would be high-end smartphones with OLED screens, while one would be a 6.1-inch LCD model. While it has been rumored that this model is just going to be called iPhone thanks to an earlier concerning a simpler naming approach, we’ll be dubbing it as the iPhone for now. According to Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, he has outlined some new details regarding the upcoming LCD version in his new report.
6.1-Inch iPhone 9 to Feature CGS or Cover Glass Sensor - It Will Be Lighter but More Shock Resistant
As reported earlier and several times before, the affordable 6.1-inch iPhone will not have 3D Touch. As per Kuo, the phone will sport a stronger display glass which will not only be lighter but also more robust. The 6.1-inch LCD variant is also expected to use a Cover Glass Sensor (CGS) process which will be a lot thinner.
Along with the touch film sensor, Apple will allegedly add a thin film sensor as well. We do not know what the new layer would be beneficial for at this time, but it is expected to increase the cost of the touch panel by 15 percent. Approximately, it will range in the $23-$26 price range, so as a result, this model could be sold for a higher price when it is getting announced during the month of September.
The KGI report also states that starting from 2019, all iPhones, including the OLED models, will use the CGS process. This makes sense as it would result in a stronger, more resistant screen that will not crack so easily. Apple already charges a massive sum of $549 if you manage to break the backside of your iPhone X, so this time, having a more resilient glass on your side will be a welcome addition.
Suppliers can expect more revenue as the expenditure for the CGS process is a little higher than the process previously used for iPhone screens. Price of the iPhone 9 could start from $550, with a dual-SIM variant also being sold but at a costlier range.
