Galaxy S9 Plus Sales Were So Poor, the iPhone 8 Even Outsold It During the Month of May

iPhone 8 best selling phone May 2018

In the league of phones with taller displays and minimized bezels, Apple’s iPhone 8 ends up being the best-seller for the month of May, becoming a surprising entrant. This is during the period where Samsung is not having the best of quarters, having sold a combined and meager 8 million Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus units. Even during the company’s earnings guidance for the Q2 2018 period, Samsung’s operating profit record streak has finally been broken, and out of everything that we have seen, the iPhone 8 is certainly an unlikely winner here.

iPhone X Manages to Secure Third Place, Possibly Due to People Awaiting the Arrival of More Advanced Models This Year

Counterpoint Research provides its reasoning why the iPhone 8 managed to sell well for the month of May.

“According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse, Apple regained the top spot in the global best selling smartphone list with the iPhone 8. Strong promotions (“How to shoot on iPhone”) running up to the football (soccer) World Cup helped the tech giant to trigger buyer interest in Europe and other markets. iPhone 8 sales were steady in the US postpaid channels.”

Despite the fact that the Galaxy S9 Plus is the first flagship from the company inside the Galaxy S series to come with a dual-camera as well as a rear shooter accompanied by the brand new variable aperture technology, the phablet is just another iterative update over its predecessor, the Galaxy S8 Plus. Additionally, where the iPhone X was the best-selling smartphone for Q1 2018, it has quickly slumped to third place, behind Galaxy S9 Plus.

The reason behind could be that consumers are waiting for the arrival of the upcoming iPhone models, which includes two of them featuring OLED screen technology while the second one is said to rely on a more advanced LCD solution but will rock the same edge-to-edge glass form factor as the iPhone X. Furthermore, the arrival of these three new models means that either Apple will reduce the price of the iPhone X or abandon it completely to make way for the newer models.

Depending on what customers require, a better bet would be for them to wait for the upcoming iPhone iterations, possibly resulting in lowered iPhone X sales. While the iPhone 8 might not be the most compelling of purchases thanks to its previous-generation design, its $699 price tag is significantly lower than the starting price of the iPhone X, and it features more or less the same internals, coupled with water-resistance and Qi wireless charging support.
