With most key OEMs jumping on the in-screen fingerprint scanner trend, differentiation would be key when enticing customers. It appears that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 will take the cake by introducing a cutting-edge in-screen fingerprint sensor, even though one of its competitor’s upcoming flagship will feature the same hardware addition.

Huawei’s Upcoming Mate 20 to Actually Beat the Galaxy S10 When It Comes to Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensors

The Korean media is abuzz with reports that the Galaxy S10 will flaunt the third-generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensors from Qualcomm. Unlike the optical fingerprint sensors which capture a 2D image of your finger, the ultrasonic variant maps a 3D image. Most smartphones in the market right now which have the in-display fingerprint sensor, such as the Vivo NEX, feature an optical fingerprint sensor sourced from the Chinese firm Gudix. Samsung will also procure Gudix-made fingerprint sensors for its mid-range A-series, but the latest tech will be reserved for the Galaxy S10.

The Galaxy S10 will be one of the first smartphones to feature Qualcomm's third-generation ultrasonic sensor and this can prove to be a major selling point for the phone as it will be the first premium handset from the Korean giant to offer this technology.

Having the capability to accurately work through glass up to 800 microns thick, the second generation of Qualcomm's ultrasonic sensor was a significant improvement over the first-gen sensor that could work through glass up to 300 microns thick.

This means the new sensor will be even better and enable Samsung to accommodate it without cutting corners on the durability or the quality of the Galaxy S10’s screen. The second-generation sensor will be seen on the Mate 20 Pro so it will give us a taste of what Qualcomm has in store for us when it comes to smartphone biometrics.

The third-generation sensor can reportedly also work in damp conditions, and is expected to will offer a slew of functionalities such as monitoring heartbeat and blood flow, along with supporting navigational gesture recognition, in addition to stepping up device security.

The Galaxy S10 will reportedly be unveiled at next year’s Mobile World Congress, expected to take place in Barcelona during February 2019.
