iPhone XR, iPhone Xs & iPhone Xs Max Are Able to Scan NFC Tags Without the Use of an App

The iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max do feature support for NFC, but there is a little twist that you guys might not have guessed and it is a feature that Apple did not mention on stage either. The brand new models will be able to scan NFC tags without requiring the need to fire up an app to do it.

In short, if you own an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or an iPhone XS Max, you can simply walk up to a compatible NFC tag, wake the iPhone screen, and scan it seamlessly. When the NFC tag has been detected by the iPhone, 9to5Mac reports that it will trigger a notification to appear on the lock screen of the iPhone XS or iPhone XR. The user can then tap the alert and launch the app into the foreground.

However, the source does mention some limitations that comes with this feature. One of them is that any NDEF tag is supported that only ends with a URL that is registered with Apple’s Universal Link system. Additionally, the background tag reading run can only happen while the iPhone display is on. Background tag reading also requires the device to have been unlocked at least once since it has been rebooted. It can be found disabled, if Apple Pay is active, if Airplane mode is enabled, or if the camera app has been fired up.

In order for this to actually work, a specific user action will be required to initiate the action by tapping on the notification. Imagine if a notification kept on popping up every time the latest iPhone kept on brushing on a random NFC surface? This would end up frustrating the owner.
