Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Cloud Version Coming to Nintendo Switch in Japan

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the biggest, most technically impressive entry in Ubisoft’s franchise to date, is coming to Nintendo Switch, albeit with a few caveats. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Cloud Version will stream to the system, rather than run locally on Switch hardware, and, at least for now, will only be released in Japan. This will be the first time an Assassin’s Creed game has been playable on a Nintendo console since Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag hit the Wii U in 2013. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey isn’t the first game to go the streaming route on Switch – Resident Evil 7 Cloud Version was released on Switch earlier this year and the game reportedly works rather well, at least in Japan. Westerners who have tried to play the game with a Japanese Switch account have had less success. Will these Switch cloud games ever make their way to North America and Europe? It’s hard to say, as Japan has a stronger online infrastructure than the U.S. and most European countries. That said, you have to believe Nintendo is working on it.

For those who haven’t been keeping up, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes the series to Ancient Greece, and features deeper RPG elements than ever before. Wccftech’s Rosh Kelly got to check out a late-game Assassin’s Creed Odyssey mission (a battle against Medusa herself) at Gamescom, and generally came away impressed

“I had a lot of fun exploring the islands and soaking in the lovely depiction of the ancient Greek culture and lovely Mediterranean weather. The combat was good, though it took a little getting used to the end game abilities that were already unlocked on the character. […] I still couldn’t help but feel [the Medusa boss battle] was slightly out of place against the more traditionally accurate games of the past. Then again, drawing from Greek mythology makes sense given the setting.”

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey hits PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on October 5.
