With smartphone manufacturers developing affordable devices with flagship-level features, perhaps it was time for a Snapdragon 670 successor that offers improved AI functionality, better gaming performance, and support for better camera sensors. That’s why Qualcomm has extended its mid-range Snapdragon 600 series with the Snapdragon 675 Mobile Platform.

This will reduce the performance gap between the Snapdragon 710 and the Snapdragon 800 series. Eventually, manufacturers will have more freedom to price their devices in a competitive manner, while smartphone users will be able to enjoy premium features without splurging funds over a flagship device.

Snapdragon 675 Features Custom Kryo 460 Architecture, Along With ‘Cutting-Edge- AI Photography

The latest chip features the Kryo 460 architecture that is based on ARM’s Cortex-A76 cores which are tailored for flagship devices. The only chip on the market to have this CPU is Huawei’s Kirin 980. The octa-core (2 x Cortex-A76 + 6 x Cortex-A55) CPU can reach clock speeds of 2GHz, which improves the overall performance by 20 percent compared to the previous-generation series. The Snapdragon 675 Mobile Platform will also be able to offer a high frame-rate and improved gaming experience because of the Adreno 612 GPU, with up to 8GB RAM also supported.

The latest SoC also supports gaming engines such as Unreal, Unity, NeoX, and Messiah. It also provides support for tools and APIs such as OpenGL 3.2, OpenCL, Vulkan, and Snapdragon profiler to improve gaming performance on devices that are not categorized under flagships. The chip also has the Snapdragon X12 modem that can reach download speeds of up to 600Mbps.

The Snapdragon 675 also has the Qualcomm 250L ISP (Image Signal Processor), which will enable smartphone users to take studio-level photographs. Triple camera setups on both sides of future devices will also be supported. The chipset will also facilitate enhanced portrait mode and 3D Face Unlock. HD slow-motion video recording at 480FPS is also a part of the SoC package.

One of the highlights belonging to the Snapdragon 675 Mobile Platform is its multi-core AI engine which improves the performance of AI applications by nearly 50 percent. The chip will learn user behavior over time and adapt accordingly. Being made on the 11nm node means that the latest chipset will be less costly to procure for manufacturers than Snapdragon 710.

Since it bridges the performance gap between the aforementioned SoC while costing less, it will be beneficial for the end-user. Qualcomm has made the Snapdragon 675 available for a wide range of partners, and we can expect to see devices fueled by it during the first quarter of 2019.
