This is the year of 7nm chipsets, and since Apple and Huawei have already released their A12 Bionic and Kirin 980, respectively, all eyes are now on Samsung and Qualcomm. While we don’t know when Qualcomm will take the wraps off the upcoming Snapdragon 8150 SoC, Samsung might have something special for us next week, according to its Twitter account. Are we finally going to get to hear details about the upcoming Exynos 9820 chipset?
Exynos 9820 Said to Feature the Same Core Cluster Configuration as the Kirin 980
The news has come straight from the company’s official Twitter page, which says that the next generation chipset will be unveiled on November 14. Along with the release date, the teaser post hints at intelligent processing. This in line with a recent report that claimed that the Exynos 9820 will have a neural processing unit (NPUs) for helping with AI and deep learning operations. An NPU helps with tasks such as image recognition, image processing, and speech recognition, and in case you didn’t know, even Huawei’s Kirin 980 SoC features a dedicated NPU.
Unlike its progenitor, the Exynos 9820 will not feature the big.LITTLE architecture and go for a 2 +2 + 4 DynamIQ architecture instead. Detailed specifications of the chipsets are not known yet, but it will most likely be made on the 7nm process using Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography.

The Galaxy S10 is likely to be the first phone to be fueled by the upcoming SoC. Apart from rocking the Exynos 9820, the Galaxy S10 is also expected to be 5G-ready and it is tipped to feature an in-display fingerprint reader. Currently, the A12 Bionic is the most powerful chipset on the market for smartphones, and it will be interesting to see if Exynos 9820 would be able to take that crown away.
Despite tall claims, Huawei’s Kirin 980 SoC had nothing on Apple’s latest chip. Apart from using the chip to power its 2019 smartphone range, Samsung might also use it for its IoT devices. If Samsung is going to be unveiling its Exynos 9820 on November 14, we’ll be here to relay all the important details to you.
