Microsoft can't take the weekend off...

Earlier this week, some Windows 10 users reported that they were unable to select certain apps as their default choices. The issue was affecting users running the latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update (rollout remains on pause) and the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. Microsoft has now confirmed the latest Windows 10 bug and has said that the company will make the solution available later this month.

As reported earlier, the issue appeared with the release of KB4462919 (Build 17134.345) for version 1803 and KB4464330 (Build 17763.55) for version 1809, which were pushed out on October 9 as Patch Tuesday cumulative updates.

Windows ignores your choice when you, for example, try setting Notepad++ as the default app for .txt files in the Settings app and chooses Notepad as the default.

In an updated advisory, Microsoft writes under the Windows 10 known issues:

After installing this update, some users cannot set Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps.

In some cases, Microsoft Notepad or other Win32 programs cannot be set as the default.

In possible workarounds, the Windows maker suggests trying to set applications as defaults "again" as it works in some cases. If it doesn't resolve the problem for you, the company will issue a fix later in November.

"Microsoft is working on a resolution and estimates a solution will be available in late November 2018."

This file association problem is only one of the many Windows 10 bugs that have been reported in the last few weeks. The company is currently facing a lot of criticism after it was pushed to pause the rollout of the October 2018 Update due to data loss issues. However, latest bugs that have affected the Windows 10 April 2018 Update and brought activation issues for some Windows 10 Pro users confirm that the problems are in no way specific to a single Windows 10 version.
