The arrival of the Apple Watch Series 4 marks the beginning of a new design for the smartwatch. However, the design is not the only aspect of the hardware which features novelty this year. Apple has also incorporated numerous features which are far beyond any other smartwatch is the industry. Yes, we're referring to the new ECG feature on the Series 4. However, the feature was not available at launch and according to a new report, it might ship with watchOS 5.1.2. Let's see some more details on the matter.
Apple Watch Series 4 To Receive The New ECG Feature With watchOS 5.1.2
watchOS 5.1.2 will reportedly bring one of the most anticipated apps to Apple wearable. The report comes from MacRumors, suggesting that watchOS 5.1.2 will bring the ECG app to the Apple Watch Series 4. The report is backed by the documentation from Apple which the publication was able to obtain.
Since the Apple Watch Series 4 is approved by the FDA in the United States, it was found out that the ECG feature is able to record heart readings in a similar manner as that of a single-lead electrocardiogram. Together with the ECG app on the Apple Watch Series 4, users can find if there are traces of atrial fibrillation and more.
“Apple’s training document states that the ECG app is regulated and only available in regions cleared for use. The app will initially be limited to the United States, where Apple has received FDA clearance, but Apple Watch Series 4 models sold worldwide include the electrical heart sensor for future expansion.
Apple Store employees are instructed to advise customers that the ECG app is “not intended to be a diagnostic device or to replace traditional methods of diagnosis,” and “should not be used to monitor or track disease state or change medication without first talking to a doctor,” according to Apple’s document.”
In Apple's documentation, it is noted that the Apple Watch Series 4 must be running watchOS 5.1.2 to take advantage of the ECG feature. In contrast, the paired iPhone should be running iOS 12.1.1. Only iPhone 5S and newer models are supported, so upgrade if you're looking forward to using the feature.
