Android Pie Rolling Out for the Huawei P20, P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro in Europe

The year hasn't been a particularly good one for the world's largest telecommunication equipment manufacturer. Lots of countries are on the verge of boycotting their equipment owing to accusations of state-backed espionage. Only time will tell if those accusations are correct, but things are looking grim at the moment. Despite all the controversy, one cannot deny that Huawei still makes excellent devices. The company's Android Pie rollout schedule is more or less on par, with devices such as the Mate 10 already running Android Pie. Today, owners of the Huawei P20, P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro will be pleased to know that the update is now rolling out in Europe.

EMUI 9.0 Android Pie rolling out for the P20, P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro

Huawei's in-house Android Fork aka EMUI is easily one of the most heavily customised builds out there. Although it comes with a metric ton of bloatware, it is host to a lot of useful features. Its latest version—EMUI 9.0—is based on Android Pie and brings it with several optimisations along with the usual Pie goodies such as App Actions, Slices, Navigation Gestures, etc.

All three devices run Huawei's flagship Kirin 970 SoC which comes with a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit). EMUI 9.0 makes use of the SoC's NPU to optimize several day-to-day tasks and improve performance. The company claims that the system response speed is increased by 25.8%, overall system fluency is increased by 12.9%, and application startup is shortened by 102 ms. Furthermore, GPU Turbo 2.0 Mode reduces touch delay by as much as 36% and lower SoC temperatures by up to three degrees. Lastly, there is a Google Lens-esque functionality that uses on-device AI to identify objects in the camera viewfinder and a reskinned version of Digital Wellbeing.

The update first made its way to Chinese variants of the P20, P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro (no surprises there) earlier this month. It weighs in at a massive 3.94GB, which is standard for all EMUI updates. You should receive it OTA in the next few days, ideally.
