Astral Chain Bringing Fresh Platinum Games Action Exclusively to Switch this Summer

Nathan Birch

The most recent Nintendo Direct was full of big announcements, but one of the most surprising things revealed was Astral Chain, an all-new adventure from the action masters at Platinum Games. The new IP, which lets players control two characters at once for double the mayhem, will be supervised by Devil May Cry and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya, directed by NieR: Automata designer Takahisa Taura, and feature character designs by Video Girl Ai and Zetman creator Masakazu Katsura. Not a bad lineup! You can check out the first trailer for Astral Chain, below.

Here’s how Platinum Games describes Astral Chain:

The Ark: A massive, prosperous, multicultural city. But disaster strikes when mysterious dimensional gates appear, bringing dangerous alien creatures to the Ark to attack the people and corrupt the land. The Ark police form a special task force, known as Neuron, to face the alien threat head-on. Humanity’s last chance against invasion is a special living weapon called the Legion. As a rookie Neuron officer, you and your Legion will work together to solve cases and save humankind. Astral Chain gives you full control over two characters at once for thrilling Synergetic Action, courtesy of PlatinumGames. Switch between several Legion types and skills to save the world your way.

No doubt about it, Astral Chain is definitely a Platinum game. Demons, over-the-top action, weird character designs, goofy dialogue – all the elements are there! It will be interesting to see how Astral Chain differentiates itself from other Platinum titles, but it certainly looks fun, and it should be a nice holdover until Bayonetta 3 arrives. Speaking of which, during the Nintendo Direct we were also assured that Platinum is still “hard at work” on Bayonetta’s next game.

Astral Chain arrives exclusively on Nintendo Switch on August 30. What do you think? Excited to tackle Platinum’s latest?
