Galaxy S10’s Fingerprint Sensor; Will It Work With Screen Protectors? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Omar Sohail

Rumors flying prior to the release of the Galaxy S10 series had alleged that the in-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus would require the protectors to have an unsightly hole in order to be functional. However, that thankfully isn’t necessarily the case, but it all comes down to the type of the protector you are using.

If you’ve already purchased a screen protector and while it’s applied, your fingerprint does not get recognized, perhaps you should go through our report and see what that is. Here’s everything you need to know on the kind of screen protectors you’ll need in order for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus’ ultrasonic fingerprint reader to work.

Dome Glass Is the Only Glass Protector Currently Guaranteed to Work With the Galaxy S10 & Galaxy S10 Plus

The in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus has been sourced from Qualcomm and it reads the 3D surface area of fingers using inaudible sound waves. Since these sound waves can’t travel too far, the fingerprint scanner might not work with tempered glass screen protectors. According to Android Central, the reason for this is that the adhesive used to glue the screen protector to the phone creates a thin air gap, which prevents the ultrasonic scanner from working properly. That’s why some glass screen protector makers have punched a hole towards the fingerprint area.

That’s where the Whitestone Dome Glass screen protector comes in as it uses a liquid adhesive called LOCA (Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive). This technology is expected to minimize the amount of air between the protector and display, allowing the ultrasonic scanner to work just fine. So, while other glass protectors may or may not work with you Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus, the Dome Glass variant will. Moreover, it’s really easy to install and you won’t have to worry about air bubbles when applying it. At $50, the Dome Glass isn’t too cheap, but then that’s not a huge price to pay to use the in-display fingerprint scanner.

Another option is to stick with the good-old plastic screen protector that comes pre-installed with all Samsung phones. It works great with the ultrasonic sensor of the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus and if you need a new one, it will hardly cost you $8. However, keep in mind that plastic protectors do not offer the same level of protection as tempered glass and also makes your phone’s display more prone to scratching.

In short, Dome Glass seems like a worthy option for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus, we believe that if you’re shelling out a minimum of $900 for a flagship, it would be best to purchase the $50 accessory right now.
