Borderlands 3 Finally Confirmed at PAX East With a Mayhem-Packed 4K Trailer

Nathan Birch

After years of persistent rumors, and much teasing from the publisher itself, Gearbox Software officially announced Borderlands 3 at PAX East today. The Gearbox panel was a bit of a mess, featuring a lot of technical difficulties and a bit too much magic (yes, magic) from Randy Pitchford, but Borderlands 3’s debut trailer delivered pretty much exactly what the hardcore fans have been waiting for.

While Gearbox didn’t share a lot of specific info about Borderlands 3, they did confirm the game won’t be embracing the battle royale trend. No, based on the trailer, Borderlands 3 appears to be a traditional four-player co-op experience, featuring 4K cell-shaded graphics, returning characters like Tiny Tina, Sir Hammerlock, and Claptrap, and over a billion procedurally-generated guns to collect. Some of which have legs? You can check out the trailer for yourself, below.

Looking good! And not everything about Borderlands 3 is familiar – it looks like we’re getting a new team of four Vault Hunters. We have a muscular female hunter, who can seemingly summon six additional arms, a younger girl who may control some sort of mech, an older gentleman who looks to have the ability to project a holographic version of himself, annnd a big-ass android guy. Overall, they seem like a solid crew. The trailer also reveals our new villains, and the fact that players will be visiting multiple worlds, rather than just Pandora, this time around.

At the moment, we don’t have a lot of concrete details about Borderlands 3. Character names, and other details have yet to be revealed. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long for more info – Gearbox is promising to reveal more about the game on April 3. What do you think? Does the trailer have you hyped, or has Borderlands’ time come and gone?

Borderlands 3 delivers all-new shooting and looting to PC, Xbox One, and PS4. A release date has yet to be announced.
