Earlier this month we saw multiple reports claim that OnePlus will launch two new smartphones as a part of its OnePlus 7 lineup. While one of the gadgets will succeed the OnePlus 6t, the other will be a new addition to the company's portfolio. OnePlus 7 Pro Has A Triple Rear Camera Setup With 3x Optical Zoom - The Gadget Does Not Feature A Time-of-Flight Camera Sensor
As we've told you countless times before, OnePlus loves to share features of unreleased gadgets with users in order to build up momentum for them. This year, the company provided the good folks over at Wired with a "near final pre-production" prototype of the smartphone. Naturally, Wired got around to test the device, and the results are out.
Before we get to them, it's relevant to note the OnePlus 6T's strengths in the camera department. The smartphone's rear camera is capable of reproducing the contrast between light and darks accurately, capturing low-light images, great autofocus and modest noise reduction. In noise reduction, the OnePlus 7 Pro does not improve much over its predecessor, but the smartphone's camera adds on to its predecessor's strengths significantly.
The key feature that will differentiate the OnePlus 7 Pro from its predecessor and competitors is 3x Optical Zoom. Optical zoom uses the camera lens to zoom into images instead of cropping the camera's input like digital zoom. As a result, the end image quality is much better than the one offered by digital zoom. According to OnePlus' imaging director Simon Liu, the company incorporated this feature in the smartphone after receiving feedback from users in its forums.
The OnePlus 7 Pro's early camera review also comes with image samples, and the best of these is the third image above. This image is shot by pointing the smartphone directly, and the OnePlus 7 Pro's HDR manages to capture sufficient details while holding its ground against the sun shining right into the smartphone's primary camera sensor. Wired also believes that the OnePlus 7 Pro's 3x Optical Zoom is sufficient to challenge solutions that utilize algorithms - not unlike the ones found on Google's Pixel 3 lineup for instance.
In fact, the OnePlus 7 Pro's optical zoom will fit neatly in the company's philosophy of offering high-end features at a pocket-friendly price. And while the OnePlus 7 Pro's rumored $750 price tag isn't easy on the pocket, it's still less than what other companies will charge you for similar camera features on a smartphone. However, all these strengths of the 3x zoom do not mean there isn't any room for improvement. We're hearing that the feature produces too much noise, but this does not render a 'computational' feel to the final image.
In addition to the OnePlus 7 Pro, Wired also got their hands on the standard OnePlus 7. The smartphone's primary camera reduces the signal size from the primary lens for the sake of efficiency. It also combines the input from different pixels into one (Pixel Binning) to improve accuracy and efficiency. To sum it up, the OnePlus 7 Pro's rear camera is designed with one competitor in mind: Huawei. While the company's phones are banned in the US, it's nevertheless setting trends others are compelled to follow.
